The writing sits at the intersection of AI, product strategy, platform dynamics, and developer tools. It's written for builders, operators, and strategists who want to think more clearly about what's actually happening — and what it means for how we design systems and make decisions.
This is not a newsletter optimized for engagement. It's a place to think out loud with rigor — to develop ideas worth having and share them with people who will push back.
Animacy comes from linguistics — it describes the property of being alive, active, and capable of intentional action. As intelligence moves from passive tool to active agent, it felt like the right frame for what we're living through.

John Rae-Grant is a product and technology leader and consultant focused on how AI is reshaping software, work, and human-computer interaction. He has led and coached teams at Google, Microsoft, and high-growth startups, working across developer platforms, consumer software, safety, and AI-driven applications.
Today, he advises companies on building AI-native products and platforms, with a focus on agentic applications, generative UI, and the emerging protocols that connect humans and AI.
Through Animacy, he writes about the shift from static software to living systems—and what it takes to design, build, use, and co-exist with software that feels truly alive.
